Fun Facts About All Kinds of Stuff!

5 Cool Things About Honey

I love honey. it is my preferred condiment for all kinds of goodies from pancakes to biscuits to grits (yes, I am a Southerner!). Yet, this is a love that I discovered after I was grown–we never indulged in honey while I was growing up. Anyway, as I enjoyed a delicious honey and butter biscuit for breakfast, I considered the beloved honey bee and decided to see what I could discover. Here are 5 things I learned:

  • Honey bees have 170 odorant receptors…Their sense of smell is so precise that it could differentiate hundreds of different floral varieties and tell whether a flower carried pollen or nectar from great distances.
  • Bees can count to four.
  • The average worker bee produces about 1/12th teaspoon of honey in her lifetime.
  • Male honey bees, known as drones, die immediately after mating.
  • Contrary to popular belief, honeybees are the only bees that die after they sting. (No more feeling avenged at the eminent death of that vicious bumblebee that just stung you. Yes, he will live on to sting another day!)
