Classic Oreo Sandwich Cookie

Among my favorite pastimes as a kid were laying on the hood of the car and cloud gazing (remember those BIG super loooooong car hoods from the late 70’s and 80’s?), watching soap operas over summer break and sitting on the back porch with a plate of Oreos and a glass of cold moo juice. Things were kinda boring then….no golden Oreos or the Fruit Punch variety. Nope just plain ole chocolate with that oh so distinguishable cream filling.

Fruit Punch Oreos-Yummy!

So, I figured I would poke around for some cool facts about these yummy cookies and this is what I found.

  • These tasty chocolate creme sensations hit the scene back in 1912 (they are now well into their 102nd year), originating in a New York bakery where they were sold in tins. (I loooooove old tins…would love to add one of these in my collection.)
  • The cookie-to-creme ratio of an original Oreo cookie is 71% to 29%.
  • Oreos are Kosher! Yep–since 1998. (The original recipe contained pork fat as part of the creme center). Look for the symbol now verifying it as a kosher food.
  • Oreos were created with British consumers in mind-as one can tell by the original name “Oreo Biscuits”.
  • There are literally dozens of varieties of Oreos including Lemon Twist, Watermelon and Banana Split. The Lemon Twist is likely a variation of the lemon meringue Oreo that was discontinued in the 20’s.

Well, there you have it. 5 cool things about Oreos. Hope you enjoyed today’s post!
