If baseball is America’s past time, coffee must be America’s drink. You know it’s true. America consumes over 12 million pounds of this drink each year. Even those of us who declare ourselves not to be java drinkers consume coffee at some point can’t resist having a lil taste. Take me for example. I am not a coffee drinker but can’t start my day without my “concoction” (or “mess” as my friend Devin refers to it, lol) which consists of creamer, Swiss Miss, sweetener (gotta keep ii healthy, right) and a bit of coffee to taste. Yum yum!

Anyway, since today is National Coffee Day, here are some cool, fun facts about this beloved drink.

  • Unlike money, coffee really does grow on trees. In fact, they can grow as tall as 30 feet.
  • Coffee can be eaten. Don’t believe it? It’s true. In fact, certain African tribes mixed coffee berries with fat to form coffee balls which gave them lots of energy. A predecessor to modern day Monster Energy drinks?
  • Speaking of fat, coffee can increase your metabolism by 3 to 11%–so drink up!

  • Not providing enough coffee was grounds for (no pun intended) divorce in ancient Arab cultures.
  • The greatest American coffee drinker of all time? That title belongs to Teddy Roosevelt at gallon a day!
