Bessie. Ole Girl. Shug. Big Boy. These are all names that people have given to their beloved car, truck, van or motorcycle. Some of these vehicles are showroom beautiful while others are literal Ready J’s-ready for junk. No matter what they look (or smell) like, they are our beloved treasures. In fact, it seems that the more a person has been through with their vehicles (break downs, stuck in the mud, police chase ) the more likely they are to christian that vehicle with a name.  Anyway, for those who don’t know, today is National Name Your Car Day. So, in honor of the occasion here are some cool facts about the automobile.

  • The first cars did not use steering wheels. Instead, they used joystick-like levers.
  • Most American car horns beep in the key of F.
  • If you like slamming your car doors, do NOT move to Switzerland because slamming your car door is against the law there.
  • The first VW Beetle was manufactured by Porsche. It’s true alright. Adolf Hitler ordered Ferdinand Porsche to manufacture a Volkswagen, which literally means ‘People’s Car’ in German.
  • The first insurance policy written for automobiles occurred in 1897 in the United States.
