Fun Facts About All Kinds of Stuff!

5 Cool Things About Denim

Everyone, at least everyone I know, loves a good pair of jeans. My daughter came home from school the other day overjoyed because the principal granted them a dress down day. In High School, this totally means jeans. Heck, Jeans Day Passes are given out at work as prizes for various contests. Jeans are an American institution for goodness sake. So, true to form, this got me wondering about them. So, I googled it and these are 5 things that I learned:

The word denim is a derivative of the French City,  de’ Nimes–get it? Denim?

The word jeans has its origins in Genoa, Italy. Genoan sailors worn cloth pants. The French referred to the Genoans as “Genes”. The term blue jeans comes from the French phrase “bleu de Gênes.”

Mark your calendars ’cause May 20th is the official birthday of jeans in America. This is the day Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis received their patent on rivets from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Note, though, that this source, states that American jeans manufacturer VF Manufacturing, first produced Lee Jeans in 1889 in Salina, Kansas.

On average, every American owns about 7 pairs of jeans. Told ya it’s an American institution.

World’s most expensive brand of jeans? Dussault Apparel’s Trashed Denim jeans coming in at a hefty $250,000. Yeesh, I’ll stick with Faded Glory.

Well, there you have it. Thank you for reading my post and I hope you enjoyed it.
